Sitting is one of the biggest health risks in everyday life, especially in the long term. Just over 50 percent of Germans belong to the so-called "permanent sitters", i.e. they do not move away from their desk for at least four hours a day. The corona pandemic and working from home have further exacerbated the problem. There are actually only a few small things that need to be considered so that your health is not endangered. We have five tips for you on how to integrate exercise into your everyday work!
The dangers of sitting too long
Sitting is an underestimated danger - this is mainly due to the fact that the consequences often only become noticeable in the long term. The consequential complaints that can result from the direct damage should not be underestimated. Some of the many negative effects of too much desk work include:
- Neck, back and joint pain due to the rigid posture for several hours, incorrect posture further exacerbates the problem
- Relaxation of the abdominal muscles, which often results in the so-called "hump" in the back
- Pinching/denting of internal organs such as lungs and stomach
- Poor blood circulation in all parts of the body and also in the brain, which affects concentration
- Increased risk of mental illnesses such as depression or burnout
- Lower calorie consumption, so you're more likely to gain weight the longer you sit
- Increasing the risk of diabetes and various metabolic diseases
These are just a few of the many consequences of sitting for too long. Especially in Germany it is a big problem, which unfortunately has become the norm. With small tricks and changes, the risks can be almost completely eliminated, we have summarized the most important tips below!

Tip 1: Movement breaks & standing activities
In order not to endanger your health and to stay fit even on long working days, you should sit for a maximum of 60 minutes at a time. After this time, your concentration will already decrease and you will slowly become tired, which will also affect your performance. A study has also found that after long periods of sitting, you become more forgetful. This is also one of the reasons why exercise is so important in dementia.
The term "movement break" sounds more complex than it actually is. Just 3-5 minutes of light exercise is enough to get your circulation going again. If you work in the home office, it would be sufficient, for example, to put the laundry in the dryer or to water all the flowers. Even if you vacuum the apartment briefly, you have taken a few steps and can sit back at your desk with more concentration.
If you work in an office, here are some tips on how to incorporate movement here as well:
- Telephoning while standing: At least since the corona pandemic, video and telephone conferences have been part of everyday life. In many companies, 2-3 hours of meetings a day is normal, and most employees naturally participate in these sitting. You can do your health a favor by standing up for all your phone calls from now on. We’ll explain to you in a moment how you can easily take part in video conferences while standing and what advantages this brings!
- Getting things done in person: It will certainly sound familiar to you: you are sitting at a desk and have to deliver a message to a colleague. Picking up the phone is much easier here, even if the person is in the same building. Here you can get used to doing even small things personally from now on. Although this is unusual at first and takes a little more time, it promotes health and personal relationships
- Parking some distance away: When most people drive to work in the morning, they look for a parking space as close as possible to the door. From now on you should get in the habit of parking a little further away from the company building if you are doing a sedentary job. So you already have a good "movement advantage" before the working day has even started
2. Height adjustable desk & ergonomic office stool
In many companies, height-adjustable desks are now standard. The advantages for employees and companies have been proven many times and these tables are also recommended for image reasons. An ergonomic workplace creates an incentive for new employees and may even be a unique selling point in your industry/region.
The height-adjustable desk makes it easy to switch from sitting to standing. With him you are much more likely to work standing up. Your freedom of movement is much better when standing, so activities such as sorting documents or doing the daily post are much easier and can be done faster.
Many users of a desqup standing desk have also stated that they rarely sit down once they have stood up during the workday. Habit plays a big role here, but working while standing just feels a lot more natural. Additionally, once you're standing, you're more apt to move. Going to the printer or to a personal meeting takes less effort than sitting at a desk all the time.
The height-adjustable desk also promotes better blood circulation in your body. This allows you to concentrate better and longer and your memory also benefits from it. Now to the advantage of video conferences: In a digital lecture or a meeting, your colleagues/business partners will immediately notice that you are not sitting. Your posture and gestures are better when you are standing - you automatically appear more self-confident and serious!
The height-adjustable desk goes hand in hand with an ergonomic office stool. With its movable rubber underside, this ensures that you always move minimally, even when sitting. The stool can also be adjusted using a compression spring, so that it can also be used while standing.
Both a height-adjustable desk and an ergonomic sitting and standing stool have become affordable for everyone today.
